New Ordinance Restricting Sizes of Holes on the Beach

The Town of Bethany Beach has passed a new ordinance restricting sizes of holes dug on the beach to one foot deep by two feet wide. The ordinance also mandates that all holes dug by beach patrons must be filled in by those patrons before they leave the beach. The ordinance was established for safety precautions as numerous emergency situations and fatalities have occurred from people being trapped in large holes dug on the beach. Injuries have also occurred from people unknowingly stepping into holes on the beach that have not been filled in. Numerous other beach Towns along the Atlantic Coast have had the same ordinance in place for the same safety related purposes. We ask that everyone is mindful of their actions on our beach as it is shared by all.

Below is a link from the Sussex Countian, a local news organization, including a great article and video describing the need for safety precautions on Sussex County’s beaches as it relates to large holes being dug on the beach.
